JDB 089: 5 Great Things I Learned from Podcast Guests in 2015

JDBlogger Legal Marketing 2015

I started 2015 off not knowing if I was going to continue on with the JDBlogger Podcast.  I felt like it didn’t have direction and lacked purpose.  In fact, I didn’t release my first episode until June.  After taking that much time off I realized that I missed podcasting and I missed the opportunity of speaking with great legal marketing minds from around the country.

I finished the last few months off releasing two episodes per week and interviewing some really interesting guests.  In this episode I discuss five great things I learned from my guests on the podcast, who were, in order of appearance:

  • Michael Whelan
  • Dan Weeks
  • Shantelle Argyle and Daniel Spencer
  • Nicole Abboud
  • Joe Pulizzi
  • Bryan Wilson
  • David Meerman Scott

JDB 088: David Meerman Scott | Newsjacking

David Meerman Scott on JDBlogger

On this episode of the podcast I interview internationally known marketer and sales strategist David Meerman Scott. I recently read David’s book “Newsjacking” and learned that he had recently released a course of the same title.

What is Newsjacking?  Many attorneys may already be incorporating Newsjacking into their marketing.

David defines Newsjacking as “the art and science of injecting your ideas into a breaking news story so you and your ideas get noticed”.

Many attorneys use current events or recent news stories to generate ideas for blog articles or other types of content, however as David points out on the podcast there is a lot more to successful Newsjacking than just writing an article that touches on current events.

Specifically Mr. Scott covers the following in this episode:

  • How to monitor the news in real time so that you can get your content noticed
  • How to get your content noticed by local reporters who will want to use you a source for their article.
  • How to use social media as part of your Newsjacking strategy
  • Why Newsjacking can be such a great strategy to get actual clients into your law firm.

Newsjacking – Life of a News Story

I recently read David’s book Newsjacking and found it to be full of strategies that can be implemented immediately into your content creation.

JDB 087: The Texas Law Hawk | Interview with Attorney Bryan Wilson

Texas Law Hawk JDBlogger

Two videos.  Nearly two million views. To say that attorney Bryan Wilson’s videos have gone viral is an understatement. In fact, I would be surprised if every lawyer video ever made would have a combined total of two million views.

Wilson is a criminal defense attorney practicing in Fort Worth, Texas.  He and some of his friends had made videos in the past and decided to shoot a couple to help him with his new law practice.

The result was a pair of videos that the Dallas Sun Times called the “greatest advertisement known to mankind.”

Texas Law Hawk on the National Stage

The power of a viral video is seen in the incredible amount of press coverage Bryan has received.  He has been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, NPR, Fox & Friends, Fox, Inside Edition, and even the Playboy Channel.  Every major online news site from the Huffington Post to New York Daily news has run stories on Bryan.

A quick Google search of “Texas Law Hawk” will show that Bryan’s videos have grown to the point where other lawyers and journalists are “newsjacking” him to gain some traction.

JDB 086: Put Your Client First in Your Law Firm Marketing

Legal Marketing JDBlogger

Every year the day after Thanksgiving my father, Norm, and my brother, Todd, put together an float for the annual electric lights Christmas parade held in Spanish Fork, Utah. They are the co-owners of Skiba Auto Repair and for years have used the parade as a way to not only promote their business but to be an active participant in their community.

On top of that it has been a great family activity where the extended family gather together to add lights and decorations to the float.

This year Skiba Auto decided they would have people (i.e. me and my siblings) walk along side the float and hound 1,000 glow-sticks – a big hit with the young kids watching the parade.

A couple of weeks after this parade we were back in Arizona and my daughters had the opportunity to walk with their dance group in the local Christmas parade here in Queen Creek, Arizona.

As I watched the parade here in Arizona I noticed many local businesses had entered the parade but had done very little when it came to actually putting a float together.  The Skiba Auto Repair float likely won’t be the Macy’s Day Parade any time soon but there is always an effort to create a float the family can be proud of.
